2013 Tournament, Another Fish in the Basket
Thursday, May 23rd, 2013 Updated: 4:06pm
As the early morning light drifts over the mountains mixed with hazy clouds, captains quench their thirst with a caffeinated beverage or two. Resurrection Bay stands calm awaiting the wakes of dozens of boats. On the highway, bus loads of soldiers and volunteers head towards the Seward Small Boat Harbor anxious to embark on what has become a well anticipated event. In the fishing town of Seward, Alaska, the 7th Annual Armed Services Combat Fishing Tournament gives soldiers of recent foreign wars a chance to enjoy some R&R at the best tourist destination in the world. Soldiers shed their uniforms for hoodies, jackets and fishing poles while competing in a friendly competition to see who lands the biggest barn-door halibut. Several fish in the past weighing over hundred pounds.
Started by Bob Candopoulos and Keith Manternach in 2006, the event has taken over 1000 soldier fishing and given away ten of thousands of dollars in cash and prizes. Co-sponsored by the Armed Services YMCA of Alaska, the event hosts numerous fundraisers and receives much community support. After the the boats return to port, fish are weighed and the score board goes up. Following the weigh-in, Seward’s American Legion Post 5 hosts a dinner event where cash and prizes are given to tournament winners, captains and participants alike. The amazing event has been thoroughly enjoyed by all including the captain and charter boat owners who wish to give back to the veterans who have given so much.
“We can’t thank them enough for what they do for us and our country. We’re very happy to be a part of this event and let soldiers know they are appreciated.” Alicia Busick, LeSea Charters.
Update: Captain & crew (5 soldiers) aboard the ELEU have returned with limits of halibut! Great job guys!!!
